Description of the Method

Progestin-only pills, also known as the mini-pill, contain only progestin (no estrogen). They prevent pregnancy mainly by thickening cervical mucus and sometimes by stopping ovulation.

With perfect use, the mini-pill is about 99% effective. With typical use, effectiveness is around 91% due to missed or late pills.

A prescription from a healthcare provider is required. Available at most pharmacies.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include irregular periods, spotting, breast tenderness, and headaches. Less risk of blood clots compared to combined pills.
